Versa sofware observations and reflections on this second anniversary

It is two years since Fitbit acquired the engineers, technology and intellectual property of fitbit and I wonder why he Versa implementation and the fitbit app are not better. The Versa hardware platform is pretty good. Nice design, quality materials for the most part. The software though has a lot of issues, some due to bugs and some due to poor design decisions.

  • Sync between the phone and the watch is pretty dismal. I am constantly having to reboot the watch, restart bluetooth or reboot the phone to get the devices to synch. Please sort this out, there is no excuse for this.
  • The whole watch face thing is a mess. Every time you select a different watch face it has to be downloaded again to the watch. With large watch faces this can take over 30 mins and is prone to failure. If you have to factory reset the watch to fix a problem you have to go through the whole payment verification process again with the watch face vendor. This was never an issue with the Pebble.
  • The Music transfer to the watch has to be someones idea of a joke. Talk about a Rube Goldberg machine.

Although I can't answer for the music (I never use it), I may be able to help with the sync issue.  What phone are you using?

@Viceversa  I am not sure if I agree. The Fitbit eco-system is actually quite cool, and they have public APIs. I think they will get a lot of competition from Google Wear though. Fitbit is clearly turning towards the 'health' market with the fitbit health solutions https://healthsolutions.fitbit.com/ (for good or bad)

There is fierce competition in the smart-watch market, at all pricepoints. Apple's smartwatch with eSimm is a trailblazer when it comes to the future of smartwatches. Google's wear may open the door for a lot of smart applications that fitbit can only dream about.... Maybe at least.

That said the fitbit Versa's functionality and endurance at the given pricepoint is attractive. But is it enough? And then there are undisputable issues with what seems some hardware compromises to keep the battery lifetime up.

That there are some (emphasis on some) people that experience issues with syncing and connectivity is without doubt. But it is not general. I never have these issues you mention, and I have neither issues with installing new clockfaces. Most people have no issues. Why you have them I don't know, but don't blame fitbit before you are certain that it is not something particular to your setup and configuration... I agree, it should be fully plug and play and clearly it is not. I also agree it could be so much better still, we'll have to see what the future brings.
