So, I have had my versa since 2018, and all of a sudden it won't work. It still connects, but the versa itself says "to start, download the Fitbit app." I
re-downloaded the app, have restarted it several times, turned it on and off, reset it. Nothing works.

@SunsetRunner, welcome to our Fitbit Community! I'm happy to assist you with your Fitbit Versa since it won't show the clock face, just a "Download Fitbit app" message. By the way, thank you for troubleshooting this issue before contacting our forums.
I would like to know if the setup process asked to update the firmware. If not, please follow the steps that are listed in this help article in order to update it. After this, try the setup process again and see if the issue gets fixed.
