Able to create a custom meal and indicate number of servings

I would really like to be able to build a recipie and then indicate how many servings it makes and how much I ate and see nutritional break down by servings too.  I think it would way easier than trying to enter all ingredients then when its time to eat the leftovers I can just add the recipie serving.

@FerdinandFitbit This isn't an existing feature, at least I can't find any way to turn the food I have logged into a meal. (I know I can create a meal from scratch, but that isn't what this feature request is about.)

This is essential!  I'm cooking for the family.  If you add a field to input how many servings for the recipe, we can select how many servings to add to that day.  That would be bonza!  Otherwise honestly, it's a bit unusable... I don't have time to sit here and calculate one sixth of everything...

Hi @Dmgittschau, thank you for taking the time to share your ideas with us.

I think this would be a great feature for saving some time and customizing the food you want to log to your dashboard. Once again, thank you for stopping by!

Along with the ability to save recipes, it would be great to have the dishes presented in the report as those dishes, and not the combination of ingredients used.

Any improvements would be great, but ultimately, I would like a personal breakdown such as this:

  • dishes/recipes: enter and store recipes (ingredients, final serving size(s), variants on recipe, etc). Determine nutritional value of each dish from ingredients
  • meals: keep meals feature to combine dishes often eaten together, with entry for default amounts of each dish (similar to what's available now). Expose default amounts of each dish when selecting for entry into the food log (some dishes should be allowed to default to zero amount - I could often switch a side between broccoli and spinach, for example), but let each amount be edited before entry, as well as selection of recipe/dish variants.
  • food log: report dishes rather than all the ingredients from recipes. Perhaps allow recipes to be expanded to show breakdown of ingredients (should reflect ingredients from time food was logged, in case the recipe is changed down the road)

On the sharing side:

  • Share dishes and meals: I should be able to share recipes and meals with FitBit friends (especially famliy members I'm eating with), importing into my own list or for them to import from me
  • Recipe database: Secondarily, perhaps look at recipes from others (or as with restaurant items, look in a database for recipes already enterd by others from cookbooks we both have)

I can understand why FitBit may not want to get into it too far, as the features can blow up in a big way (even further into grocery shopping lists, preparation, recipe ratings....), which may stray from the focus of being a good fitness tracker.  If not done by FitBit itself, I'd even be happy if there was integration with a popular "recipe based" third party to allow this more easily.

Either way, the current entry methods for home-cooked foods are very disappointing.

I too make enough of my favorite dish for an entire week.  Then portion it out, but unfortunately the system does not ask how many servings or portions the batch makes.  So the entire dish is added to each day, then i have to go and manually divide each item by the # of portions.  Very time consuming.  It would be great to have that feature included in the "create a meal"

I too would like to be able to add my recipes into the FitBit database rather than using a 3rd party like MyFitnessPal.

It would be nice if the 'Favorite' foods would look at your history of an item and adjust the default option to match.

eg you have a mug of tea every day for breakfast, every day you have to manually change the serving size to a mug instead of the default cup. over time it would change that default option to mug rather than tea based on history and the fact a 'cup' has never been selected.

so no need ot tell it the default, no need ot go and edit the favorite or do anything other than use it without those extra clicks.

Seriously, this really needs to happen! It's almost a deal breaker to be honest.... I really don't want to have to use multiple apps to log my food intake, especially when I am trying to cook healthy meals at home. The fact that you can't enter a recipe and scale the servings is so unbelievably frustrating.

Is there any plan to incorporate this? Looks like this has been on the radar for over a year 😕

Yes, a recipe builder would be an excellent addition to the Fitbit app.  It is always an inconvenience to have to jump from one app to another to track everything we need to track.  You've got the heart rate, steps, calories and even macros.  That's great... but I STILL had to purchase another app so that I could build recipies.  Can you at least EXPLAIN WHY, after so long, you still don't have this feature???

Thank you for your contribution @torch628. I believe that this suggestion can help other users that log their food on a daily basis. I will gladly send your request to our team members so they can take it into consideration.

In the meantime, you can go ahead and register to MyFitnessPal, where you can manually log recipes and ingredients in order to keep a detailed registration of your food on a daily basis.

Any other ideas you might have, feel free to share or vote for them, if it’s already suggested in the Feature Request Forum.

Have a great day!

It would be nice to have a section in foods where you can I input recipes and it will calculate the serving size of calories etc... There are many foods I make from scratch but eat regularly. Grand effort to eat healthy but frustrating to have to re-enter the items and guess the amounts of multiple foods. This would be more accurate and much quicker. Entering your food is burdensome to begin with but have to repeat it all the time just adds aggravation.

The logging of my heart rate, blood pressure, sleep pattern, and glucose is just as if not more important to me as logging my steps.

You can do a couple of things:

1) Create a meal that contains all the ingredients in the right amounts for one serving of the recipe. When you add the meal, it will add the items to your log in the amounts specified.

Or

2) Use a recipe program that supports nutrition information, enter your recipe there and then create a custom food with the nutritional information the recipe program gives you. This has the benefit of only having one item for the recipe, keeping your log uncluttered.

I guess I am missing something. I don't see a spot to do that - I have the
charge.

It is very frustrating - since some of the food combination I eat regularly.
and personally I don't want to be bouncing all over various apps - it would
be nice to keep everything in one spot.

Have a glorious day in the Lord!

To create a meal, you have to use the website for now.

To create a custom food, you can use the website or the app, Android for sure.

In the app you go to your food log, click the plus and choose the custom tab, where you'll be presented with "+ ADD CUSTOM FOOD." (No, I'm not yelling, that's just how it apears in the Android app, including a reasonable approximation of the color.)

On the website, it's a little less in-your-face. You still go to your food log to start. On the right, there's a panel labeled "Favorites" with two tabs, "Foods" and "Meals." Choose whichever you want to add and at the bottom of the panel, click "Create a new food" or "Create a meal."

Definitely would like a way to save a recipe; I do a lot of cooking, and having this feature in MyFitnessPal was a pretty handy tool!

Hi

Love my new fitbit. Had it for a week and its great. I also cook meals like the above. A great example for myself is a stew. So if we can portion off a Meals like Food Items that would be great.

Currently what I do is log the Meal (2015/10/04 Stew) with the ingredients to have a.) a total calorie count and b.) a record.

Then what I do is create a new Food Item with the same name as my Meal (2015/10/04 Stew), enter the total calories, put it under the brand "Home cooked" and portion accordingly.

Thanks

DDK

I agree that a fix is needed to allow logging a single serving size of a meal.

Dear Fit Bit developers,

PLEASE ADD A FEATURE to calculate serving sizes for the recipes/meals that we enter manually as they are home cooked meals.

I feel that this is a very simple thing that would drastically enhance the user experience, and make accurate/easy tracking much more useful. This is something that myFitnessPal does very well, and I enjoyed with them. When I switche dto FitBit, the app and interactions excelled in every way except this one.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE allow us to designate serving sizes for meals we add/create ourselves.

Sincerely,

Avid FitBit Fan who sings your praises in every way

This feature is essential. All that is needed is a fraction and weight.

I baked bread and make soups, and other meals, and I cannot take the time to divide each fraction each day. It is not feasible to use the meal option as is.

I use the add custom meal feature, but you can't change the serving size once it's been input. It would be great to enter an entire recipe and then it alters the amounts of each food accordingly.
