Able to select which data to export and date range after Google migration

I recently migrated to the google app which has superseded my fitbit app. It appears that the google app does not provide the same options to export the data from the fitbit device that the fitbit app allowed. The original fitbit app allowed me to output a spreadsheet that was a daily summary of the body, activities and sleep information.

Just saying ... I'm with KevinKe.  I was expecting the same functionality as Fitbit not the absurd data dump that Google are giving us.  I'm looking at alternatives to Fitbit and Google fitness trackers right now.  What a shame

I tried to export my data today for the first time since I upgraded my account to a Google account, and now the only data export option is to export the entire history of all my Fitbit data. We used to be able to select a data metric (eg. steps, heart rate, sleep) and timeframe and just export that data. Not any more. So I exported the entire history, found my step data, and opened the file, only to find it is giving me my step count in approximately 3 minute intervals per day, and not providing the total daily steps. That's over 100 data points per day, and it doesn't summarise steps per day. What's more, it's telling me I was doing steps between midnight and 6am, when I was most definitely fast asleep. The data is inaccurate, and in this format, practically unusable anyway. I want to compare my daily steps for the month with the same month a year ago and 2 years ago, but I can't. Google is effectively witholding my data from me by only providing it in an unusable format. Shame on you Google. I'm pretty sure this is illegal! It's my data. If you can summarise your daily steps in the app for each day, why can't you send you that information through a data export? We should be able to choose the timeframe, the type of data we want (steps, heart rate, sleep etc) and we should be able to select from a "PER DAY" option and a "detailed" option. What's the point of tracking your data if you can't export your daily data and track your progress over time? I will be switching to an Apple watch unless this issue is resolved FAST!!!

The only halfway decent option I have found is to export my data to Apple Health and then using a paid Apple App called "HealthExport" to export a CSV.  Terrible option but best I can do since Google update.

So, looks like it's been 2 years and they still haven't fixed this?  Way back when, my mom switched over to Google. Later she asked me how I download the monthly data to import into Excel. I took her through the steps but when we got to Data Export, hers was Google Takeout and mine was still Fitbit.  We tried that Google export and like others mentioned, mostly useless data for the average person. So I've been procrastinating moving to Google account for 2 years but looks like time is running out.  Early 02/2026 is the cut off.

So I went through the steps and took pictures since my data is still on Fitbit, not Google.  Maybe this will help Google realize what we want here.

  1. Go to https://www.fitbit.com/dashboard
  2. Click Login in upper right corner and log in using Fitbit credentials (not Google).
  3. Upper right corner next to logout, click the fitbit icon
  4. Fitbit1.JPG

On left side menu, click Data Export.  This is where Google differs from Fitbit account.  I get the screen shown here but hers goes to Google Takeout with only an option to export that massive data file (which is pretty useless for most people).  Fitbit account, though, shows an option to download partial data:

  5. Fitbit2.JPGClick "Export a selection of your Fitbit data" link and you can choose to export useful data in csv or xls format:
  6. Fitbit3.JPG

For me, I choose to download steps (activities) and sleep for last month and export to .xls.  Or you can download whatever data you want by week, month, custom, etc. up to 31 days..

This was really useful for me to download my steps and import into excel. I then plotted my step account and set up Conditional formatting to make sure I get my 10k steps.  I've been doing this since July of 2017, once a month.  Now, when I switch to Google, if not fixed, I'll have to manually type in steps and abandon the other data I used to get under "activities".  Please fix.  Otherwise, when my Charge dies, if I'm still manually typing in step count, I will probably switch to Apple or something.

Previously I was able to download the previous month's activity, body, sleep data ... rather than having to export a nnnMB zip file containing all of my minute-by-minute data. I was able to do that at the start of January but the ability seems to have disappeared this month. Why is that?
Yet another useful fitbit feature removed by Google!!!

If something exactly like fitbit legacy export is not supported by google after my account transition in May, 2026, I will stop using my fitbit and recycle it.

I have an excel spreadsheet I've been maintaining on a near-daily basis since 2014 of fitbit data, and this + the export feature has kept me from completely leaving the brand. A lot of us are creatures of habit, and if we can't continue our habits, we will look for new ones.

Having used Fitbit since 2015 and having a spreadsheet of steps per day since I am now deeply dissatisfied to find that having been force to migrate to Google I can no longer do that. Instead I get a massive files with every metric possible and the steps are given as a hundred of so intervals per day with each day in a different file. I'm almost willing my Fitbit to die now so I can move to a product where I can download my steps again.

In response to @rusmo and @ValRob

I had 4 different Fitbit trackers over the years, with the Sense being my last one. I too had a spreadsheet where I downloaded the Fitbit data to support my graphs. After I moved from Fitbit to Google, I had the same issues with the downloads.

I then found the Fitness Dashboard from Exercise Quest which helped to plug the download void, but once the Sense gave up the ghost, I decided that Fitbit was no longer for me. Google have ruined everything which Fitbit had built.

I checked out a few options, and for the last 6+ months I've been using the Apple Watch Series 10. It excels in many ways, but not in others, i.e., I still have to manually enter data into my spreadsheet, and the Heart Rate Zones are not constant, as with the Sense, but only when you activate a workout.

It's not ideal, but I refuse to invest any further money in Fitbit products.

@SFOTyke Yes, it's quite incredible how Google have ruined everything Fitbit have built. I've had a Fitbit One, Inspire and Luxe over the years. I did consider moving to an Apple Watch before I purchased my Luxe a couple of years ago but even the smallest model looked like a knuckle duster on my small female wrist! I would have maybe got used to it but then found that, even with an Apple product, I would be unable to download to a spreadsheet and have to enter it manually as you are doing. I am quite amazed as looking at Forums there are thousands, if not more, worldwide who wish to do this simple task and it cannot be rocket science for tracker manufacturers to enable a user to be able to do that simply!

I've looked at a few options to deal with the Google regime but all involved setting up macros, permissions, dealing with multiple json files, etc which never quite work when I have tried them. I'll take a look at Fitness Dashboard from Exercise Quest - thank you.

I certainly will not be investing in any future Fitbit products.

UPDATE - ten minutes later. I have tried Fitness Dashboard from Exercise Quest and it has worked a dream. All data downloaded (and checked to be correct) since 1/1/26 into my spreadsheet. I've spent most of this afternoon battling to do this and you've given me a solution that worked seamlessly in seconds! Thank you! May even have to go and find who wrote this API and donate some money as it its worth it.

I agree it is unbelievable that Google has no easy data export.  I do have a work around that is the best I could figure. If you have Apple phone get the "SyncFit" app.  This importa Fitbit into Apple Health.  Then use the "HealthExport" app to export CSV files.  It works pretty good and though a bit more complex actually allows exporting more info.  Google ownership of Fitbit is a huge disappointment.
