Automatically guess / learn exercise types

Using any Fitbit with an accelerometer (and even moreso the Surge with a GPS), it would be extremely helpful if the dashboard could make an intelligent guess at the type of activity someone is doing based on motion detected.

For example, you might be able to tell the difference between walking, running on a treadmill, running outdoors, cycling, and using an elliptical based on the combination of velocity and motions captured.  Even if you can't guess with complete accuracy, you could learn over time how to associate velocity + motion with specific exercises when people specify on the dashboard or mobile app what the exercise was.  Since most people will have a small number of exercises that are their personal most common, you could learn over time to make pretty accurate guesses for each user.  This would make using my Fitbit much more convenient that having to go into the app every day and correct the exercise types for that day.

I note that some of Fitbit's competitors are already moving in this direction.

I have a Charge HR and when I have pressed the button to auto log an exercise/activity it will allow me to assign an activity. But what if I accidentally assigned the wrong one?

I would like to be able to change the assigned activity to something else.

If I delete it and recreate it, I would lose the steps and also the entire auto-workout.

It would also be nice if it would keep track of when you pressed the button, so even if you deleted it, you could still recreate that execise as well. (Sort of auto exercise history/log).

I agree with the request.

I am repeating workouts and wish to compare the same workout from a historical perspective to see if there is improvement.  Ideally, within the app I would tag the workout with a label and reuse that label to the same workout the next time I perform the workout.

For instance,  P90X workout Plyometrics.  How did my heart rate compare to the other times I exercised?

I'd like to simplify this request. As a first step, just recognize that I am exercising.  Jawbone's Up24 notices when I'm active and asks me if I was exercising and to categorize the exercise.  Yesterday, I went for a 4.5 mile walk and tracked it using MapMyWalk (which I have synced up to Fitbit). I expected that the exercise would be imported to Fitbit (as it is with MapMyWalk and the Jawbone Up24).  It was not.  Smiley Frustrated

The Fitbit Charge HR can automatically detect when I go to bed.  It should be able to tell when I'm exercising.

Thanks,

Brian

@Bad_Horse This idea is awesome! Figure certain workouts have specific motions and it would be very cool for the tracker to learn and associate the movements with a particular workout. I will be sure to relay your request onto the team for further review.

Thanks for sharing your request with us!

I forget to start and stop my Fitbit to track my excercise. Similar to auto sleep detection, it would be great if Fitbit HR could auto detect excercises based on heart rate and other signals. Make this editable just like sleep to delete if it was logged incorrectly as excercise.

We are happy to announce that automatic exercise detection has been implemented. Fitbit's SmartTrack feature automatically recognizes and records select activites to ensure you get credit for your most active moments of the day. You will always have the option to tell your tracker when you start and stop a specific exercise, but now SmartTrack will also do the detection for you. Available now on Surge and Charge HR. You can learn more about this feature in the SmartTrack FAQs.
