Make sleep score optional

Suggested idea is to have the sleep score optional !

We should be able to choose if we have the score or not , I hate feeling like I failed my sleep!

I agree Arlene. And have too many comments and time spent in these forums already pointing the absurdity of the new score and how valuable sleep averages are to so many users including myself. But at least for me the main goal that I wanted is satisfied enough. I can easily and QUICKLY now find my weekly, monthly and yearly sleep averages. I have over three years of data kept on my Fitbit devices and prefer not deleting everything altogether and starting over with something else entirely. I have no problems with anything else with my fitbit other than this ridiculous score thing (that plus how inaccurate heart rate can be when exercising compared to my old Polar heart rate monitor though with a chest strap). If other people like yourself are not satisfied enough with this info then I still still hope they will revert back to the sleep average default view as well. But I would just gently add that if you knew it was only a click or two away it can't hurt to share that here. Many of us just want that sleep average data available on our mobile devices, easily enough, and to go back to living our lives. As we can see Fitbit has changed the title of this thread once again. What is is, 4 or 5 times now? Hard to understand. But that's why to me some battles just aren't worth fighting on with. At least I can see my sleep averages fast enough and for now I'll take it.

I totally get your points. Some of us however I have not been able to do workarounds or find what we’re looking for. My other concern is the change to the dashboard. I find it inconvenient, cumbersome. Other commenters have said that the dashboard has two smaller font they don’t like scrolling they prefer the old tiles. On that issue as well Fitbit has been ignoring the comments. It seems the simple fix to keep your customers happy is to give them an option. Is it so hard to do?

Dalwpg,

I hear what you're saying. My wife has the iPhone 7Plus (and doesn't want to upgrade to newer phone yet because of lack of home button) and I have the newer 10XS. But only hers has the new dashboard layout. Mine is still the same dashboard as it's always been. Go figure. So when that also changes I'm sure I will agree with you and dislike it (since I don't like how hers looks now). But her iPhone 7 does not have this sleep score update yet. We both have iPhones. She has new dashboard and I only have new useless sleep score. Makes little sense. So I have no idea how Fitbit does things and why they seem to like to make steps BACKWARDS at times. But life is like this and at least I have found a way to see my sleep average in two quick clicks. And I'll take it for now.

There is some humour in this. My wife and I both have iPhones. The new dashboard was downloaded automatically on my phone. She got a notice for an update and declined it and still has the old dashboard. Fortunately both of us still have the good old sleep system, counting hours and no scores. But that new dashboard is something I do not like. My wife looked at it and will avoided at all costs.

Lol so I will try to refuse all updates for at least a while. Thanks for the tip. 🙂

The workaround to see averages doesn't help those people who find this score not just useless, but actually damaging to mental health and wellbeing. Unless there is a way to completely remove sleep score out of sight, the only solution for such people is to ditch Fitbit.

I personally disabled heart tracking in my app, so sleep score is always 0 for me. But it also makes the device 50% less useful, up to the point I don't care about looking at the stats anymore (except my sleep time each morning). If they don't fix it soon, I will be replacing it with a different tracker.

I just wanted to echo about irakez said about the score being useless and damaging, even if you can findaverage sleep scores elsewhere. I mean, rating a 4.5h sleep as 74? Come on. And I'm not going to disable heart rate tracking because that would make the device next to useless to me.

Does Fitbit really think enough people are going to buy their premium features to make up for all the people (like me) who plan on ditching their device at the first opportunity? I know I wouldn't buy another one at this stage and have been thinking about replacing mine with other brands. I'm just glad I didn't upgrade my device when I was thinking about it last year.

I thought that I was one of the few people who just didn't get the value of the sleep score and actually found it to be very annoying. I see now that my opinion is not unique. I hope Fitbit releases an update soon to revert back or improve. Although, I can't imagine how one could improve the sleep score enough for me to find it useful.

 Developer response:

Hi Craig - We're sorry to hear this. Help has arrived. You can still see your sleep average and duration if you swipe left on the Sleep Score graph and expanded the view. To learn more about the Sleep Score, see this: https://bit.ly/2KOgutz. Should you need further assistance, reach out to us at contact.fitbit.com. ~ Fitbit Support

I left a one star review on Google play store and got the above responsestill stuck with the pointless sleep score

Absolutely hate the new sleep score feature.  What a useless, arbitrary number. It's definitely not helpful to me.

I want to see average hours of sleep again.  If you believe this sleep score feature is a necessity then please at least include a place in settings where we can choose whether to display

score or average hours of sleep.

There are 93 comments under HOW TO TURN OFF SLEEP SCORE that should be moved to this thread. More splitting opinions to make users think they are in a minority. Fitbit is again dropping the ball. Please check this other 'feed' I will be suggesting that it is moved here. Right now all the comments are open for voting so vote, thanks. G.

I’m so glad I’m not alone here. This was a TERRIBLE IDEA! And shame on your UX leadership for allowing it to be implemented without more realistic user testing.

I’ve use this app over the last two years to track and improve my sleep.  I felt that I was making progress and doing better, being told I’m a failure every morning belittles all of that effort and starts the day on a depressed note.

Also, as other users have stated, the most important data is now minimized and the highest in the visual hierarchy is a meaningless score based on invisible stats.

Bad user research, bad user experience, bad data viz design - Bad Decision!

Make the feature optional in an obvious way, then watch the analytics as they show the percentage of users who fall into a Persona that was completely ignored.

Well, I have found a way to get rid of sleep score - just delete that tile. If they aren't going to give me useful information, I'll just gauge my own sleep by how I feel.

I loathe this feature. Make it to where users can turn the sleep score OFF!! This feature is juvenile and only elicits anxiety. The number of hours slept and the breakdown of REM, deep, light and awake are enough. This is the worst update idea ever. After using Fitbit for over 7 years and recommending it to my clients over other fitness trackers I've considered throwing it in the trash. Adults don't need to be rated on their amount of sleep. Just provide the necessary information and shut the **ahem** up.

All Fitbit devices are same. The system that gave us useful sleep data is still available exactly we all seemed to have used it before but now it's as a premium subscription "in some regions" it's bonkers and a useless expensive watch.

Like everyone else, I find the sleep score to be meaningless and of no value.  Please bring back the actual sleep averages and remove or at the least, make the sleep score optional.  I'm sure it was well-intentioned, but not a great idea to force it on everyone.

  • Why did hours and minutes slept go away? Sleep score means nothing to me. I’d like to be able to decide for myself in the morning how I feel. I don’t need a score designed by someone else. Bring back hours and minutes. Seems as though someone got real busy fixing something that wasn’t broken

Sorry, Craig the developer, but this is not solving the problem. We need
to be able to shut off viewing the sleep score. It's really discouraging.
It's like if you have a serious illness you have no control over, getting a
daily reminder of how much your body sucks. Leave it as an option for
people who can do something about their sleep issues, but default it to
sleep hours, and let us remove it if we need to.

@bluebear18 totally agree. I hope the cause for your comment is relieved.

I agree, also thou I'd like to see a seperate breakout of the sleeping resting heart on the HR screen. That's a useful number to know for those that know how to use it.

Nothing like waking from what felt like a refreshing nap and getting a "Poor" grade! Let users decide if they want to focus on raw data like hours or minutes or some vague assessment value.

I just want the old interface back, the sleep score is so bad, it seems to have a broken algorithm. I miss the easy glance to see my sleep hours per day/week and all the details in one place.. Now moved around or locked behind a pay wall. Depending on if this gets changed or not, this 5+ year fitbit user will be moving on.

I 100 % agree. This completely ridiculous and I am so disappointed that I don't have a choice or that I don't see both. What is even worse, for prior weeks, most don't have the hours or the score.Whoever had this "brilliant" idea should be fired on the spot; no questions asked.

I am due for a new fitbit this Christmas. I will be seriously considering other options unless this is fixed.

I hate this feature... makes me feel like I’m failing. Get rid of it please!

All they are going to do is move your comment to a different thread with hundreds of people who agree with you, a thread whose subject they have changed many times to obfuscate the original point. I have been trying to get an answer about this after commenting about how demoralized I felt for a while now. It doesn’t seem hopeful.
