Track Cycling on Mobile App with GPS

What would be a great addition to the mobile app would be the ability to track cycling as well as the run, walk, hike options.

@SunsetRunneraggreed this is one of the more frustrating things I have found with my Charge HR.

Basicaly I want my activities to be logged as the right activity and not pick hike for a bike ride as I do both alot.

I want to get my rides for comuting and errands to log as, well, rides in fitbit and not steps and also get my GPS/HR data up to Strava.  Strava just has things that are very bike specific that I wouldn't want fitbit to even try to do like keeping track of milage on what bike(s) used.

I can get  a ride loged in Strava over to fitbit and it matches the HR data up and I don't even need to set activity from my Charge or in the app!

However if I want to get my data over to Strava from Fitbit I have to log the activity as a run in Fitbit.  I can then change it in Strava but its still logged as the wrong activity on Fitbit with steps (I can't edit the activity on Fitbit. That is a different feature request).  Logging this as a run also throws off a lot of other stats like steps, floors, cals burned so I would really rather not.

Just adding a 4th activity option for Bike would solve all of this. It also seems to me all the code is there just not the 4th activity type "Bike" when you start tracking.

I posted a request for this months ago. I don't understand why they don't add it to the app for both Surge and Charge HR. Come on Fitbit you are letting down a lot of your customers!!!

I Miss this feature very badly and hope it will be implemented soon.

I do spin classes and it's really disheartening when your steps and calories are down, when you know you have pushed yourself to the limit for 45 minutes. It would be great to Bluetooth in a cadence, that would make it accurate.

Yes! @Miknab. I use the GPS from my cell. I just would like to add the data manually when I'm done with my workout. If the app would just allow editing of milage biked, calories, time... that would be A huge improvement.

Abosolutly! If there could be this plus a full integration with Strava, I would love my fitbit even more than I already do.

As introduced in Surge, it would be great if outdoor biking mode can be introduced to Charge HR as well. With this feauture we will be able to track biking with GPS and maps and also see the biking distance, calories burned etc. It can be included as an exercise option along with run, walk hike features.

Thanks,

it would be great to be able to choose "bike" when logging and activity from the app for Android/iphone.

Right now we can only track run/hike/walk

I think think that would be an amazing improvement to the app. And since it already tracks walks, runs and hikes I don't see why they couldn't add bike tracking through the phone.

Exactly, that would be really helpful for people who bike and as summer is just around the corner 🙂

Yeah, I don't understand why you can't track biking using the gps on the phone. If you are able to track walk, run and walk, biking shouldn't be that different! I don't want to buy a surge just for that.

Ditto! It would be great to have a feature in fitbit, just like HIKE, RUN, WALK, to also take in consideration biking time and distance.

My charge HR tracks so much info when I use my iPhone app, but then I have to categorize my workout as either a walk, run or hike....

This is driving me totally crazy.

ADD A CYCLING MODE TO THE MOBILEAPP!!!!

Hello, I am new to the Fitbit community, I just procured the Fitbit Charge HR and I am very happy with everything it does. Only thing I would really like to see is an improvement to the Fitbit App to track exercises like cycling. Can this please be added to the app? Android and iOS

Why is this request marked as Implemented? This request was for the app to track cycling, not the device.

While it is great that Surge owners can now track cycling, owners of other Fitbit products are still left in the dark!

As a Charge HR owner, I still have to 'fudge' the data collection by tracking my rides as walks/hikes and manually logging the activity on the FitBit Dashboard.

It's a shame, because all the pieces are there... If we could just track exercises as a Cycle instead of a Run/Walk/Hike, the activity could make use of the GPS data, elevation, user weight, heart rate (for HR owners) and we could have a wealth of info on our workouts, and fantastically accurate calorie burn estimates!

Agreed. This is a must have feature. I have Vitality Health and points are awarded for steps and activities such as cycling. I need to be able to differentiate between taking a run or above ride otherwise the steps are skewed.

Fitbit Announces Integration With Strava

Users can now track health and ride metrics in one place

JOE LINDSEY

http://www.bicycling.com/bikes-gear/news/fitbit-announces-integration-strava

Workout tracking just got a bit easier for Fitbit and Strava users. The personal health tracking giant, Fitbit, announced today that its devices and app will sync automatically with social fitness site Strava.

Fitbit has historically been great at tracking daily health metrics, but isn’t as seamless at tracking rides. Strava, on the other hand, is built around tracking rides but not daily health. That means you essentially need two separate devices and separate accounts.

The integration means you can now log Strava workouts and Fitbit metrics on Fitbit devices like the Surge, or continue using the device you have and use the app to sync your accounts.

The sync works automatically; there’s no uploading or converting files. Strava users get credit in Fitbit’s exercise logs, including important metrics like calorie burn. Best of all, it’s free, since the sync update will be included with new versions of the Fitbit and Strava apps. It’s available for download immediately on iOS and Android devices.

I don't understand how the new partnership announcement and sync with Strava (a GPS app for running and cycling) is meant to work when the Fitbit app doesn't allow you to log an activity such as cycling in the drop-down choices?

I've just linked my Fitbit account with a new Strava account and quite obviously all the activities have transferred over with the same category I used 'Hiking' (because it's sounds like 'Biking'....!!!!)

Come on Fitbit....get this simple fix sorted.

it doesn't work for me.

I connected both since one week and none of them, fitbit or strava sync the activities between each other, really strange. I was wondering if we need to upgrade the accound on both of them ? anything I missed ?

I have a charge HR and strava app on my android phone.

Make sure you have the newest updates on both apps? This report is from May 12th, just a couple of days ago, so it is a new development. And I think you have to sign up/set up through the strava.fitbit.com link.

I haven't tried it personally, I was simply passing on the info. I returned my Charge HR within two weeks of purchasing it.

It's just as if the Fitbit app is left in the dark, but by doing so they
make their customers get the competitors apps and competitors gears.

Scaring away existing and new customers that try the app Fitbit got for
their gear is a well known market strategy, I don't know if it's another
word for downsizing or controlled bankruptcy - but it's something along
that route..

It's incredible that they have not done anything about it - other than
marking the problem as "fixed"

Dear Fitbit:

People bike.

If you can't support cycling, people will buy a different brand.

It is not hard to track cycling. You know distance. You know the time. You already use distance and time to calculate intensity and therefore calories burned.

By refusing to convert cycling to steps, you are effectively telling all cyclist that cycling is some how less valuable than walking because you only rank friends by steps and only steps.

If you don't want to convert cycling to steps, than let me rank my friends by calories burned or minutes active.

I know that for over a year, Fitbit has said they will add support for cycling. If this is truely a priority, then tell us a projected release date. Is it 2015?

“Learn to ride a bicycle. You will not regret it if you live.” Mark Twain

“Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bike. John F Kennedy

“Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling.” James E Starrs

“The bicycle is just as good company as most husbands and, when it gets old and shabby, a woman can dispose of it and get a new one without shocking the entire community.” Ann Strong

“As a kid I had a dream – I wanted to own my own bicycle. When I got the bike I must have been the happiest boy in Liverpool, maybe the world. The first night I even kept it in my bed.” John Lennon

I bike, therefore, I am.

Yes please! My work-supplied iPhone only has 16GB, so I'd really prefer not to need a separate app just to track my rides.
