Access to NFC Chip on Fitbit Ionic?

Hello,

I would like to access the NFC Chip on the Fitbit Ionic.

But unfortunately I cant find any documentation regarding the NFC capabilities.

Is it closed? Like the iPhone NFC-Chip?

Or is it open and free like a bird,... or an Android Phone?

We don't currently have an API for NFC, but we're interested to hear peoples thoughts on what that might look like, or what use cases people have.

Hey JonFitBit, I have several Use-Cases and would like to implement.

For example Nr.1:

I HATE fiddling around with my phone, unlock the screen, navigate to the firbit app, recognize the correct icon, process in my brain to type in how much water I just drank. I want to have an NFC-Chip, preferably glued to my water-bottle,  that I just hold against my FitBit Ionic, and it automatically registers that I just drank a bottle water. Same for food, but my food is not as standardized as my water of course ;D

Example Nr.2:

I want to check-in to my favorite gym with the NFC chip. Currently I am using the gymmer app, and it's convenient, but still it would be even easier just to hold my wristwatch against the NFC-checkin-Chip.

Another use case, I work at an online ticketing company that sells festival tickets, and we have an NFC ticket solution for Android at this moment, the user loads his ticket on his phone, and can then just enter the festival with an automated NFC gate, no more scanning personnel needed to check that user's ticket.

It would be awesome if we could do the same thing with a smartwatch.

in our Master Course (Interactive Mediasystems) we're developing an App for a Smartwatch (veesy). With the App you can exchange personal data with another person through nfc. So my question is if there is already an NFC-API? If not is there a Release Date in near future?

My wife is a type 1 diabetic. She uses an NFC sensor (Abott FreeStyle Libre) in her arm which continuously measures her blood sugar. Currently she needs to use her Android phone or a separate device to read the sensor. Using the Fitbit would be much more practical.

This is even more useful for the small kids with type 1 diabetes. My 5 year old son started go to school and for him always very hard to scan Freestyle Libre sensor with smartphone. Would it be possible to add this functionality to Fitbit watch? I would buy 10 watches instantly for other kids who uses Libre sensors in my neighborhood.

I go to the gym regularly and all the weight machines support NFC - so it would be great to be able to get my workout data logged onto my Ionic watch and tracked by Fitbit.

The Fitbit Ionic has the potential to incorporate a logical ecosystem for diabetes incorporating activity, glucose and food intake.

I use abbot freestyle libre flas glucose monitoring sensor pads. These are becoming more widely available on the NHS in the uk. The health benefits could be huge and would make excellent business and marketing sense for fitbit to support this so people can check their glucose levels on their ionic

From the ' arduino world' have look at https://playground.arduino.cc/Learning/MFRC522.

It has reference to the adafruit C software for a lot of functions (e.g. read and write).

Should be a peace of cake to adapt existing C software for the Versa!

I can have a go, but I need to know more technical details about the nfc chip used and how to access.

It should be possible to have a secured area/encrypted for payment functionality (as provided by a lot of banks in the USA and areas for other applications (secured or not secured).
