Constant Sensor Collection

Hello,

I am working on a medical research project which uses the fitbit versa to monitor participants sensor data such as accelerometer, gyroscope, etc. A large portion of this study is dependent on the collection of sensor data and it is essential that little to no data is lost during this study. My question is whether it is possible to create an application which runs consistently in the background collecting sensor data. I have read about using a clock face, but it seems that this implementation would not collect sensor data when an application is opened.

Unfortunately, there is no 'background'. A clockface or app is either running or it isn't, and only one can be running at a time.
