Is there a way to access fitbit data live from a mobile app?

Hi, I am trying to understand how 3rd party code for fitbit works. Let's say I want to write a mobile app that displays the user's current heart rate as recorded by their fitbit. Is accessing the web api the only way to accomplish this? Or is there a way to do it by communicating with the user's fitbit or with the fitbit mobile app? That is, I'm trying to figure out if accessing this information is possible without having to make a round-trip across the internet in order to get the most up-to-date information.
