Start workout in app

Hi,

Without revealing to much information -> I want an app where I can start a workout from, I want to read out the workouts data -> distance/duration/cal/hight.

Is this possible? I don't see an option to custom start a workout with a sporttype (running, hiking, swimming)

If not is there a better way? Do you need to start a workout and then switch to the app?

At the moment, I think it's impossible. See if this feature request would enable what you want. If so, please vote!

Unfortunately, that feature request isn't getting a lot of interest and it would probably be quite time-consuming to implement; it's not mentioned on the development roadmap so I'm not optimistic about it.

Too bad, I think such a feature would really improve the apps in the store. Looks like you also can't minimize the app to run in background and start a separate background...

I'm in two minds about running apps in the background. The watch CPU is roughly equivalent to that of a desktop computer from circa 1995; ie, about 1% of the oomph of modern desktop CPUs. In addition, although converted to bytecode, apps are interpreted rather than native. Trying to execute multiple apps simultaneously could result in tears, and a lot of bad publicity.

It would become more feasible if devices with more powerful CPUs were to be introduced, but that would cost in terms of $ and battery life.

Being able to compile apps to native object code would help in the meantime. Google found that they had to do this for Android apps.

in terms of battery life it's not ideal for such low capacity batteries. But not being able to start workouts from another app looks kinda basic functionality to me. Just gonna keep my eye on the roadmap and hope in the future they will allow it.
