Having just set this up, a few hours later it has just gone blank - black screen. I held button in for the recommended 10 seconds, the logo came on, flashed and then a big red cross came on the screen and the screen then went blank again.

Please, after being fully charged, try to sync your device one more time. If you have difficulties to do that, please visit this article.
In addition, restart the smartwatch one more time.
If that doesn't resolve the situation, change the clock face.
