This is the second device I've had that just packs up. Now there is no live chat support even though it says there is. Veeery annoying.

Hi, @justjennie55 , welcome to the community, I suggest you use the search bar where you will see a number of conversations about charging. Briefly check the 4 little pins on the charging cable are slightly proud of the mating surface and free (they are spring loaded) If they are not in order contact "Customer Support" for a replacement cable, alternatively you can buy them at a modest cost on Amazon. You might also review Why isn't my Fitbit device's battery charging? if you still have a problem. Finally, clean the back of your "Sense", I use rubbing alcohol with a cotton wool swab and a cotton bud to detail the pits that locate the pins on the cable.
