Always On Display During Run Exercise - Doesn't Stay Always On!

When I turn on the "Always On" display mode, and enter a Run Exercise, the screen does NOT stay on.  It fades out after some number of seconds - which seems random.  And, during the run, there are times when I can't even get the display to show up again by lifting my wrist, shaking my wrist, dropping my wrist and raising again.  This is very annoying during a run.

What am I doing wrong?  Is there a setting I'm missing?  I want to be able to go for a run, and ALWAYS be able to see the display so I can monitor heart rate (I am a heart transplant recipient 6 months ago and it's very important for me to watch my heart rate).

Thanks in advance for any advice!

@barnett_dave   There is a separate Always On toggle in each of the Exercise Shortcuts.  When you choose Run, swipe up on the tiny "^" at the bottom of the screen.  Toggle the Always On to On.  Swipe down to get back to the Start screen.  When you using the shortcut, the screen will fade to dim, but will return to bright when you raise your wrist.

Since you are interested in your heart rate, you can customize your middle stat so it only shows heart rate.  Tap on Middle and uncheck everything you don't want to see.  This will keep you from having to scroll through everything after an accidental screen tap.

I think Always On works only with the watch face not with apps like Exercise.
