Fitbit Sense is tracking steps I haven't taken

Hi folks,

I received my new Fitbit Sense a few days ago and have been quite happy with it so far. However, the step counter appears to be malfunctioning and logging phantom steps when sedentary.

At first I thought it was just happening while I was typing at my desk, which I could understand (although I still wanted to fix that). But it's now 00:30am - so, 30 minutes since the step count reset, and I've been sat up in bed watching TV the whole time - and apparently I've done 163 steps! I've definitely done 0.

I could understand it logging a few steps here and there, but 163 in 30 mins of being sat still seems excessive. I'm sure at least 1,000 steps logged each day aren't actually happening.

Does anybody know what could be causing this or how to fix it?

Hi, @b1lake09, welcome to the community, as you know "Steps" are triggered by your arm movement (that's where the typing issue comes from). You may find this article of use How accurate are Fitbit devices? and this third-party comment How to make your fitness tracker count steps more accurately - The Verge , it's not just Fitbit!

my Fit bit sense will log 10,000 steps and the congratulatory foot/fireworks display yet it's morning and I've only been awake a few minutes. This is intermittent but makes that day & weeks activity inaccurate. Today (7/25/2022) I following Fit bit instructions on resetting it. Will continue to monitor.

Welcome to the Community, @b1lake09 and @tripletdad10@Gr4ndp4 Thanks for always helping our members.

@b1lake09 and @tripletdad10 Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I understand your concern about not getting the right amount of steps tracked and appreciate your efforts while working on this matter. In addition to the suggestions shared by @Gr4ndp4, may I know if you have MobileTrack connected in your Fitbit account?

Let me explain MobileTrack is a feature that records basic stats such as steps using your phone's sensors, specially if you don't have a Fitbit device available. If by any chance there was a fan or anything buzzing nearby, the Fitbit app might have logged steps to give you credit by mistake.

Assuming this is correct, please check this help article which describes instructions to remove this feature and monitor your Sense's behavior in the next days. About the incorrect steps synced, you can log a non-step-based activity such as driving to override those steps.
