This FitBit was purchased only 7 months ago and activated only 4 months ago. It is now totally dead, and we don't know why, unless you put a cheap battery in it at the time of manufacturing. If so, how do I change the battery?

Hi, @George72 welcome to the community. May I draw your attention to this article Why isn't my Fitbit device's battery charging? which explains some of the issues and provides advice. "Sense" charging cables have been the subject of complaint for a while, examine yours (Wiggle gently with your finger) to make sure the 4 little pins are free (they are spring-loaded) and slightly proud of the pad surface. If they are not as they should be you can contact "Customer Support" here (I recommend you use the chat facility or phone for a prompt response) or you can buy a replacement on Amazon.
Another issue that affects charging is the condition of the back of your "Sense" in contact with your skin, the 4 little pits need to be clean, I use rubbing alcohol successfully or occasionally warm soapy water with cotton wool swabs and cotton buds which I rotate in the little pits.
I hope this helps but if you are still stuck please post here again.
Cheers
