How can I review notifications on my Sense?

I just got my sense set up and it will buzz for text alerts or calendar alerts but it won’t let me preview them at all. What am I doing wrong?

Tap the notification once, this opens up the start of the message, usually enough to get an idea. 

Tapping open will open the the message on the phone.
