Is it just me, or once you drill down to a menu setting screen and select the option, is there now way out short of pushing the side button and returning all the way to the home screen?
For instance, if I'm looking to set the four double click shortcuts, I enter that menu screen: Settings > Shortcuts > Top Left > place dot in Google Assistant....then?
There's no "Done" at the bottom of the screen, and no way that I can figure to slide in any direction out. That leaves the hard button, which takes you all the way back to the home screen. Which means to set all 4 short cuts, I have to repeat that process 3 more times.
I must be missing something.

Never mind: solved this one, apparently swiping requires you to begin with your finger on the curved part of the bezel and not begin with your finger on the screen's flat edge. So, you can swipe back to the previous menu screen by swiping left to right, starting on the curved edge.

Thanks, it annoyed me too, going back to start, and it seems it only works from the top left corner, swiping right.
Not sure why swiping left doesn't work, nor why the back button doesn't just go back one level.

Yeah, I agree it's strange since that isn't how swiping works on other screens - for instance the main menu (icon) screens. Glad it's solved in any case.
