@rnkrish If it will be a Sense 2, I do not think it will be announced before August 2022, with release in October 2022. Fitbit CEO James Park said that the next premium Fitbit smartwatch would run Google's Wear OS3, and that is pretty much what is known so far,

Oh man, Wear OS?  There goes our 5 day battery life......

Best Answer

@MattJ71 the same route has been taken by Suunto with their Suunto 7 watch which was the first (and so far the only) with WearOS. The battery was a big problem (not even a full day of work and only up to 4-12 hours on GPS - depends on power settings). It came with power-saving modes and if used like that it could provide even 40 days of being just a wristwatch but then why not buy just a wristwatch 🙂 I'm not sure whether Suunto is going to continue with WearOS. There are certain limitations that the users didn't really like ie. no way to connect external sensors which was a usual feature of all Suunto watches. But the battery was a major deal-breaker as Suunto users are mostly hikers, ultra-runners, and mountaineers. Suunto 9 (Baro/Peak) kept the old formula (and OS) and improved on that by adding a more sleek look (I believe that was a design influence coming from Suunto 7) but kept transflective display (low-energy and always-on display can stay on without impacting battery life) and brought improvements from Suunto 7 like better maps, heatmaps, etc. I really doubt there will be a watch from Suunto 7 family. Suunto 7 was a nice experiment but came up it wasn't what the users were looking for (although, as a smart-watch, it got some userbase).

Would it be the same story for Fitbit? Hard to say. Suunto watches are more advanced sports trackers (but not really great daily activity trackers, myself I turned off 24h HR monitoring in my Suunto Spartan as there was nothing useful coming from it). WearOS may help Fitbit to improve certain areas at the cost of battery life. There are advantages for Fitbit though. Probably, the response to such a watch will show whether Fitbit should or shouldn't go that way. For me, the most important is advanced (or at least not as poor as it is now) sports tracking which Fitbit watches don't have. WearOS won't help with that. Suunto 7 uses the in-watch Suunto app to deliver all sports tracking features so Fitbit developers will need to design the features and write that code themselves, too. I'm really curious but I'm not waiting for Sense 2. I highly doubt it will support features that are important to me.

I'm sure we will see plenty of leaks a few weeks before it's officially announced (as with most recent Fitbit products).

I'm also not too keen on having a Wear OS smart watch, as I share the same battery life concerns as others here. I think battery life is one of the biggest selling points for Fitbit, if they lose that differentiation then I think there are better alternatives in the market.

Hopefully we will see a Fitbit OS version of this Wear OS watch.

@N8teGee the battery life was the biggest selling point but Fitbit would be fooling themselves thinking the competitors wouldn't catch up. It may be that in the smartwatch area the company still has that advantage (over Apple or Samsung) but on the other hand, Fitbit's smartwatches are rather on the lower end when it comes to hardware and capabilities (hence use less battery power). This advantage has been lost when it comes to trackers or sports watches (with smart-like functions). My old Suunto watch could last up to 8 days. My Garmin watch lasts 4-5 days (with the use of GPS, external sensors, sleep tracking). For non-Fitbit devices I owned, the battery life was never an issue (and they could be charged while in use, for example when cycling and attaching a watch to the handlebar I got the charging cradle so it could last even longer). Fitbit has to deliver something better than just battery life because now customers have a lot more choices when it comes to power consumption. What I'm trying to say, there is an urgent need for a new biggest selling point 🙂

@t.parker , thanks for your detailed information. When it comes to heart rate sensor accuracy, which brands do you think outperform Fitbit?

at first, apple watch.

But I do recommend you The Quantified Scientist Youtube channel to get verified tests about sleep and heart measurements.

@deiG just look for something that can connect to external sensors. For some use cases, the wrist sensor won't be ever 100% accurate regardless of brand. I pretty much never use a wrist sensor for exercising but my watch can connect to anything. This way, in case of an issue you have always an alternative and can continue using your watch.

First post!

I think Fitbit is an excellent generic fitness tracker but if you need something more specific to track sport sessions I back what @t.parker says.
