I must be using my Fitbit sense wrong. My notifications (specially WhatsApp) don’t pop up on my watch screen, and the only way to see them is to open and swipe down. Surely this is not how the watch works, and if so, I made a horrible mistake buying it and should have kept using my MiSmart Band (which was less than 10% of the cost of the Fitbit Sense).

It takes a bit of getting used to the options to setup the watch but a Sense will handle WhatsApp notifictions. Here's a summary of things to look out for.
In the phone Fitbit App Click on profile photo [top left] Device photo [middle left] Notifications And verify the top 4 items are correctly defined. Also App notifications and select any apps you want to hear from.

There are other issues that have to be considered on the phone for some phones see this article.

Hi @Craighsdempsey. Welcome to the Community. @Guy_ Thanks for your help.
@Craighsdempsey Thanks for bringing this to our attention, I'm sorry for the difficulties you've experienced with your Sense. As @Guy_ mentioned, the WhatsApp notifications should appear correctly on your Sense. If you've not done so, please double check the settings described above, and make sure the DND and Sleep Mode are off. When these settings are on, your watch won't vibrate and the screen won't turn on when receiving notifications.
Please note that with iOS devices, you need to set Show Previews to Always or When Unlocked within your phone's settings > Notifications, as well add a check mark Notifications Center for your preferred app.
Hope this helps.
