Reading messages on my Sense . . .

I've had my Sense for a while, but recently had some time to review all the features. I get notices of text messages, and I see the Sense device allows me to respond in 3 different ways. However, I have no idea how to READ the text messages on my Sense device so I can actually know how to respond. What am I missing here? If I have to go to my phone to read a message,
