Sense Miscounting Swim Laps

I miss my Ionic...  That watch was really good at counting laps. (And the numbers were big enough to read without my glasses, but that's a different post.)  The Ionic would have a miscount maybe once in every twenty times.  And when it did, it was usually because it missed a turn so I would be half a length ahead, buzzing at the wrong end of the pool, which was pretty easy to fix. (Hit the button on the side, swim to the end of the pool, and turn the counter back on.)  But then I got a notification that the Ionic could burn my arm and I needed to exchange it.  I assumed the Sense would be at least as good, if not better.  Unfortunately, I was wrong.

When I swim with the Sense, it will consistently OVERCOUNT 3-10 laps per mile.  I mostly swim freestyle, so I'm not doing anything exotic, but the Sense will randomly count laps in the middle of the pool.  I have tried a reset.  I have tried letting it "learn" my style. I have tried to  "auto recognize" the swim.  I have tried pausing at the end of each lap.  I have tried adjusting my turns.  I have adjusted the length of the pool, thinking I could trick it into counting correctly.  I swim in a 25-yard pool but I set the Sence to 50 yards. It still overcounts!  All I want this thing to do is count my laps while I swim (like the Ionic did). (This should not be that difficult, FitBit.  The old technology was great at it.)   Any suggestions on how to make the Sense count the laps that I swim and ONLY the laps that I swim?

Hi, @ob-one, welcome, I'm a daily swimmer in a 25-metre pool covering 20,000 metres a week. I have the pool length set at 25 metres, I do not tumble turn, I swim freestyle and occasionally pause to let faster swimmers get past me at an end. I check my length count every 20 lengths noting that on completion of the 20th length I see 19 on the display but 20 once it registers the end of the 20th length. You may find this article of interest How do I track my swims with my Fitbit device?

You will have noted you can personalise the display for swimming, touch the exercise icon>swim> you will see the little chevron at the bottom of the screen, swipe up> adjust the stats - the middle one is always large (and easily seen even if you wear reading glasses) so you should select "pool lengths" Once the stats are as you desire touch the side button twice to return to the clock face screen. Make sure the screen wake is set to automatic so while swimming it illuminates on the flick of your wrist.

I very rarely have an issue with the loss of data collection (restarting the device usually corrects this) If I find the lap count is not what I expect it is most likely me miscounting, a look at the "pace" figures at the end of the swim confirm this suspicion.

I do hope this helps, keep swimming, it's the very best exercise there is.

Cheers

Hi, probably is a silly question, but what about all the other option to choose? Is juat chosing pool lenght and that's it? Mine count the first 25mt, the second inatead of 50 goes to 75. It is quite annoying.

Thanks

I have changed the pool length; longer and shorter, yards and meters. I've read the help articles.  I've tried automatic start instead of manual.  I do a manual count so I am not miscounting.  I don't stop to rest in the middle of the pool, I don't stop for longer than 60 seconds after completing a pool length. I don't change stroke type midway through a length.  I don't swim with a kickboard.  None of these solutions make any difference.  My lap count is still incorrect.  Truthfully, I have given up trying to use the Sense to count laps.  It is simply not capable of doing this basic task.  It can tell me how long I swam, but if I want to know the number of laps I use a counter at the edge of the pool.

Hi, @ob-one & @SerenaD77, welcome. My previous post describing my daily swims a while ago is still valid. @ob-one, you do not mention the magnitude of the discrepancy you are detecting, if it's just one or two then reflect on the point I make about the total changing at your turn. If the difference is more significant than that then it is worth monitoring your poolside clock, we all miscount and in my case totally lose the plot. My experience is that lap counting is accurate, of course, you may have a rogue device but that's not something I've seen mentioned here in the past.

If you continue to experience this problem I suggest you talk to "Customer Support" using the chat facility or phone for a prompt response.

@SerenaD77 try personalising your "Swim" display as described in my earlier post with distance in the central register where you will be able to monitor the distance you are covering clearly. Note that the 25 setting toggles between yards & meters, try some of the other settings such as distance & pace.

I hope this helps.

Cheers

@Gr4ndp4 I wish it were that simple.  I used a counter and verified my laps, so I know it was not a miscount on my part.   It seems I gain one or two lengths every 10.  This past weekend I swam 80 lengths; Fitbit recorded 92 (approximately six laps).  I guess it's time to contact customer support.
