The suggestion to add rowing was first added in 2015. In 2018 it was marked "not planned" and the suggestion thread was locked.
Any chance this will change? Maybe the next Google Pixel watch will have it?

I'm sorry but neither Fitbit nor Google usually gives updates out to the public like that. It's just something we will have to wait for. Any information would be purely speculation at this point.

I don't expect Fitbit to revert their decision. I've never seen any locked suggestion being reopened.
As the new Google Pixel Watch will run Wear OS it would be definitely possible for developers to make a rowing app (as Wear OS is tremendously more versatile than Fitbit OS) however I don't expect that it will be possible importing the session on Fitbit because it would still missing the backend.
@renfe May I ask you what is your use with Rowing? if you're very into rowing (not sure this is the right word) you might consider to use another platform to track your sessions such as Adidas, Strava or MapMyFitness. If you tell us your need we might think about a good solution.
Cheers

A rowing option would be incredible instead of having to manually log it on the phone and then go into the app or dashboard to add more info. There's got to be a simpler way to do this. Integrating with the iFit app would be amazing.

Assuming the upcoming Pixel Watch integrates with my FitBit profile, etc. I will definitely switch. I have a Charge 4, Charge 5 and Sense, but FitBit has done so little work on its ecosystem over the years I'm ready to go. I even had to subscribe to a music service I don't otherwise use (Deezer) just to listen to music from my Sense.
As for Rowing, yes, there is an entire world of Rowing apps. I use them in parallel with my FitBit. It appears to be quite easy to integrate apps into this ecosystem. For example, I have a WaterRower with a SmartRow power meter. It supports exporting real-time stats via bluetooth to a bunch of virtualization apps; the one I use is KinoMap. So, I connect the SmartRow app on my phone to my rower, then I connect KinoMap (running on my tablet) to SmartRow, and thus I can (virtually) row across a lake in Finland (or wherever).
In other words, there is (apparently) an open ecosystem for exporting all the data necessary. But instead of being able to connect to my FitBit to record these stats, I have to start/maintain a generic "Workout" routine separately. I even had to buy a separate (bluetooth) heart-rate monitor because FitBit doesn't integrate. So I'm wearing two heart rate monitors. Completely crazy.

Yeah the Pixel Watch will use the Fitbit app
