In the instructions for the Fitbit Sense, it mentions that you can tap the screen instead of pressing the button to wake it. This is easier to do than trying to get the "button" to respond, at least for me, so I've been trying to use it and it doesn't seem to work very reliably. I've tried short taps, long taps, hard taps, gentle taps... it seems that sometimes (especially if it has just been awake) it'll respond easily, and sometimes it just doesn't respond at all. I've tried rebooting the watch but it hasn't helped. Anyone got any tips?

This. The wristband works for me. Going to have to get used it. I wish the single tap on the display would do it, like my buddy's Apple watch. For the record, Sockatome and bobby's descriptions are exactly what I'm experiencing.
Best AnswerSame issue. Works fine after the watch was just on but after 1-2 mins it appears to be I. A deeper sleep and it could take 50 taps on ever part of the screen before it comes on... if it does. Tried tapping the watch band and corners like other suggested. All work fine when watch was recently active but again issue once off for longer time. I may return my watch just for this. Very inconvenient. My index finger is sore from violent taps and thumb from the awkward pressure I need to put to push the “button”. Really wanted Fitbit to work.
Best AnswerRestarting it but still the same. I wiggled my hands and the display is still off, tap 2 times still off, it only lightens when I tapped continuously for few numbers of times with feelings 🤣

After reading this entire thread and searching the web, it seems to me that the actual digitizer screen is not what's used to wake from "deep sleep" (sleep after a few seconds). It seems more like a jolt to the motion sensors is what causes the wake, and a double tap at that. So 2x hitting the right side opposite the button or the band at the connection point works every time. You just need to wiggle the watch enough to wake it up. Tapping the screen itself basically seems irrelevant unless you're moving the watch enough to jolt the sensors. If it recently went to sleep, then a single, simple, gentle touch to the screen does indeed wake it up.

Oh gosh, you are a savior. Tapping on where the band joins the device works each and every time. It responds so much quicker too than tapping on the watch face. Thank you so much! I went with the Sense instead of the Sense 2.

I just stumbled upon this thread and this is useful information. I concur with your observation, tapping in either of those 2 areas is much more reliable. I know this is an older thread, but thanks for posting this!
