I have a Fitbit surge and Ionic. Both were on my account and were paired with Fitbit app on my iPhone. I used to use ionic most of the time but i used Surge sometimes too just for a change or when i ionic's battery is dead and its charging.
I recently bought a Fitbit sense too and i was expecting that i will keep using ionic interchangeably but after adding sense to account Ionic is not there anymore. Ionic got switched with Sense instead of getting added as a new watch.
I understand this has something to do with both models having apps and some documentation is available around this and that its not supported but is this not wrong? why should i throw away my ionic or pair it with a different account just because fitbit can't support that? Should a warning about this to existing Fitbit owners not be one of the very first things in any marketing material of Fitbit sense?

I have sense and versa and the same thing. I like you change to the other when battery is dead or when I’m doing yard work etc and dont want to risk damaging the sense.
ive added it back for certain uses but then you have to redo everything each time which is a major pain
hopefully enough people will complain and they will fix

Have you added your vote to the feature freshest?
It doesn't work because the Fitbit me clock store is not set up to allow this

That is my point. Why do i need to ask to let me keep using my old watch as a feature?
looks like this is available as feature request and was marked as under construction in 2014 below is the link. Something is wrong with this feature page. Feature was submitted in 2018 but i see comments from 2013 too on the thread and feature was marked ""Under Construction" in 2014.
Why this huge drawback of buying a new Fitbit is not there anywhere in big red words cautioning existing Fitbit owners? Why do i have to discover this after buying a new Fitbit. This is a bit frustrating.

You can only have one watch per account, so start another account for the old or new watch.
Some provisos though.
Permissions granted when installing a clock face on account A are not transferred to account B. You may have to install the clock face again under account B.
It will upload data from the old watch fine but many not allow hear rate or steps etc. to be displayed, without the permissions.

Let's look at the dates in this request, things have gotten confused with several somewhat related threads being merged. A quick look and one nitices the title mentiona devices that where released in 2016 yet we see posts from 2014.
The initial request from 2014 was marked solved in that if a user wants. They now can have multiple models of any of the Zip, One, Charge, Charge HR Inspire, Inspire HR, Alta, Alta HR, Flex, and or the Flex.
And with any of the above, one of the newer models that run the Fitbit OS may be added. Giving the user multiple units on one account. I know people that still have 2-3 fit bits on one account, but only have one of the newer models.
The developers say that they are currently modifying and testing out the changes that will allow more than one unit that run Fitbit OS to be added.
Apparently the clock face and app store was never setup for more than omw watch.
