@hamb0ne10 Hi and Welcome - yes a few in here have mentioned RLS as a possible cause of the red lines but they could also come from a multitude of other causes as well like atmospheric pressure (effect of people with sinus issues) , room temperature, sleep apnoea and sudden noises like a door closing or a shout outside - a lot can only be determined under clinical conditions but these are the main reasons and not forgetting the mattress the older it is the less comfortable and the more you will move about,

Glad to see you in the forums to share your experiences and hope to see more of you

Kind Regards

I have a lot of these little red marks (as distinct from longer periods of red when I remember being awake/got up for the children etc) and I see they mostly correlate to my periods of REM sleep.

I always thought of myself as a light sleeper, but I recently found out that I have Restless Leg Syndrome. You can google it to see if any of the symptoms apply to you. I am now on medication, working with my doctor to try to find the right medication and dose to promote better sleep. I rarely get enough deep sleep and often not enough REM. But there’s hope in working with a doctor and it’s important for the brain and internal organs to sleep well. :0)

@Rich_Laue  I think I was responding to someone who wanted to know if anyone *doesn't* have those red tick lines on their sleep chart. I'd like to know, too. But it's going to be tough hearing someone who *doesn't* have a problem!

Are those red tick marks a problem @Chardy19 I'm not sure why people think they would be. They simply are the very short periods where the body is awake or close to it, just one of the natural states a person goes through while asleep.

It's a problem when one is plagued by poor sleep and trying to figure out what's going on and what, if anything, can be done without paying for a sleep study. If your scores are consistently poor is it because these tiny restless periods add up to an hour or more of lost sleep each night? What can be done to reduce them and improve your score and overall sleep benefits? These are the questions we're asking ourselves and the community.

Hello..I was interested to read you have restless legs syndrome..

Me too.. have had for 10 yrs plus.

Also periodic limb movement disorder.

I have so many little red spikes on my Fitbit sleep graph each day...its almost alarming..

Might be a good idea to show doctor as they don't really understand how it causes bad sleep each night.

I live in Cornwall and haven't had the Fitbit for very long.

How can I see the whole line graph of the valleys and peaks for sleep? I do not like the partial with just the red lines up with a blue background.

I really like the ltw view has.  I used to see it but now I don't.

There are so many explanations and causes for poor sleep. Something as simple as sleepwear and the sheets and their fabric and laundering can be the culprit. A consult with a physician or a qualified sleep specialist might be a logical and practical first step, as well as considering and analyzing everything from your lifestyle and what is referred to as your sleep hygiene. It sounds basic but it is worth the time to think about all potential reasons for or causes of poor sleep outcomes.

A formal sleep study may be in order to try to establish how the red bars/tics relate, if they do, to your clinically registered "awake" or arousal times.

I am located in Canada and sleep studies are usually covered by Provincial health plans, sometimes accessed by personal referral, other times by family physician or specialist referral.

I am on my third or fourth generation of Fitbit devices. I have tried other devices and am now also trying, an additional sleep and health wearable device. Hope this is useful. Keep well, Insomniac44

I’m a side sleeper and naturally switch sides several time a night because after a while one’s hip gets sore on one side.  For me, the red ticks correspond nicely with rolling over, just as the larger red “awake” periods correspond with trips to the bathroom.
