The same light on my surge just came on tonight. One forum said the red light means an update but I can't find one anywhere. Tried to restart a few times but it pops right back up.

The red light means that an error has been detected and usually means a hardware problem. As mentioned, if a restart doesn't clear it then it's time to call customer support.
