Hi. @Tizmonkey , the Surge calculates your resting heart rate by taking readings while you are inactive during the day and while you are sleeping at night. It won't necessarily be the lowest heart rate you see. Over a period this tends to get more accurate, as it is based on more and more readings. You can see a graph of your heart rate in your app, but you probably will see a little more detail if you look on your web based dashboard. There's more information about resting heart rate here .
The calories you see in your sleep are mainly your BMR calories -- calories burned keeping your body functioning (lungs, heartbeat, digestion, etc). Here is some more information about that.

Just came on here to look for similar information, as I doubt the accuracy of the monitor. I have a low resting heartrate - less than 50 bpm, but the monitor frequently shows double. This evening after sitting for a while the Surge showed 92 bpm, another device and a manual check showed 46 - 48.
It's the same when I exercise. As I start, it frequently shows an immediate jump into the 150's, before settling down as my HR climbs to the 130's
It looks like the heart rate reliability is on a par with the sync reliability - hit & miss

Welcome @John_T! this is really interesting, I'd recommend making sure you're wearing your tracker properly, For all-day wear when you're not exercising, your tracker should usually rest a finger's width below your wrist bone and lay flat, just as you would wear a watch. If after this, it is incorrect, feel free to contact Support. They'll be happy to give you a hand on this.

I have tried a few different positions, and both tighter & looser strap settings - it still does the same
No real problem, I just accept that the heart rate and subsequent calorie total will be slightly off. It is disconcerting to see heart rate in the mid 150's at the start of my training though.
The other annoying thing is the fixed heart rate zones. According to all my training logs, when I'm doing cardio I'm apparently doing about 90 - 95% of the time in the peak heart rate zone which if true wouldn't be good for me. It would be good to be able to adjust all of them - not just set up one custom one.

Hey @John_T! Thank you for coming back, and for trying all the steps provided to get more accurate heart rate readings. I'd like to know if you see any change after performing a restart. Regarding your idea about adjusting your heart rate zones because custom zone doesn't work for you, you can voice your idea in our Feature Request board.
