Just wondering, how does the Surge differentiate between sleep, or just resting ? How does it tell the difference between me lying down on the bed, watching TV, for example, or lying on the bed, sleeping ?

As it explains the following article, it's all down to detected movement. If there's no movement for an hour it assumes you are sleeping
