Set up Issues Resolved

I tried to set up my new Surge, but was unable too. It needed a firmware upgrade, but the upgrade would fail every time (although it would sync). Here were the symptoms: It would intermittently connect via bluetooth (mostly would not connect) and would connect all the time via the dongle (which is how it would sync). My computer has Windows 10 installed. It would start the upgrade process, then fail every time. The bluetooth on my phone would not detect the Surge at all.

So I went to an older computer with Windows 7 on it and installed the app. Using the dongle, I was able to upgrade the firmware. Once the firmware was upgraded successfully, the bluetooth now works on my Windows 10 computer. Obviously the bluetooth was not completely functional until the firmware was upgraded. I now believe that the reason the dongle did not work on the Windows 10 computer, was that the firewall was blocking it (at least partially, as it would sync but not allow the firmware to be upgraded).

If you are trying to set up your Surge on a Window 10 computer, turn the firewall off temporarily (might be a good idea to suspend the virus program as well). Just make sure to turn everything back on when you are finished with the update. You'll then want to make an exception in Windows firewall for the Fitbit app if it has trouble syncing. Hope this helps!
