I think this is more a personal thing than a systematic one since I've never had problems walking with my Surge or Charge with my hands in my pockets. What I mean by this is that the problem won't be universally experienced or maybe will be seen onbly by people who move in a certain manner.
For what it's worth, using GPS won't affect your step count since the steps are counted by the Surge in the same manner regardless of the operating mode selected.
