Step on Surge way lower than One

Love everything about the Suge EXCEPT that is does not appear to accurately record steps. I have had a One for 2 years and know how long my walking routes are and how may steps/miles I get on these routes. Surge tracks less than half the steps. Unless you are really moving your arms it seems you are out of luck on gerring steps. Walk with your hands in your jacket to stay warm not many steps counted. I am wearing it correctly and would love to keep it but need some help with the accuracy.

if it's not during daily activities, you can use the GPS to track the distance

So anytime I go for a walk I should use the GPS and that should track my miles and steps more accurately?

I think this is more a personal thing than a systematic one since I've never had problems walking with my Surge or Charge with my hands in my pockets. What I mean by this is that the problem won't be universally experienced or maybe will be seen onbly by people who move in a certain manner.

For what it's worth, using GPS won't affect your step count since the steps are counted by the Surge in the same manner regardless of the operating mode selected.
