Surge Indoors using GPS

Foul weather forced me to do my daily 5-6 mile walk at a local mall.  A year of walking with my Surge taught me that I walk 5.25 miles in 1'30".  Today my 1'30" registered only 4.25 miles while walking in the mall.  I suppose the metal gridwork in the mall ceiling interferes with the GPS signal.  And although I logged approximately the same number of steps as I normally log on a walk this distance, my pace (normally 17'30" for a mile) registered as a mile in 20'30".  Any thoughts?

Thanks for the information.  Hopefully I won't be walking indoors any more this winter/spring.  If I do I will keep your suggestions in mind.

Yes, GPS is supposed to be used outdoors. For any indoor walking/running, distances are going to be steps x stride length (without GPS), or likely inaccurate if your GPS signal is sketchy.

I should to agree with @Dominique, I think that it would be better if you use the option "Workout" instead in your Surge, this will give you steps, distance, duration and calories burned. You can edit the workout and name it as a "Walk", in case you want to do so. Or if you want to give it a try again with the GPS, take a look of this tips to improve GPS connectivity.
