Ive tried changing my stride and my dominant hand settings but my surge has just started to act up. I walk with two others at lunch and their turn its track 1000 steps more and we are all the same height? It used to work fine what do I do?

First thing to try when a fitbit misbehaves is a restart. Here's how:

I have restarted it several times.
Still doesn't track the way it should.

The restart is only real tool we have available so I'm not sure what else to suggest. Are you still within warranty? (see www.fitbit.com/returns for terms) If so, it might be worth contacting customer support to see if they can help:

My Surge has been off too. I've restarted it and it's still off, so because i"m still under warranty, I'm getting a replacement.

Thanks for replying @DaveM1984, have you tried to contact support, so they can take a look on your case. As you already restarted your Surge, it might be that you need to contact them. You said that previously it used to work just fine so it sounds like something went wrong with it.
