Surge step count not accurate?

Hi.  I just started using my Surge again after a few years.  In short, the step counting seems off.  Here is what happened:

 

Yesterday I walked a route of 3.16 miles and got a step count of 6,235.

Today, I walked the exact same route then went longer for a total of 3.68 miles, but my step count in 5,232.

 

How can my distance be longer and the step count be 1,000 steps lower?

@Ramius1975 Stride length. Go to the web dashboard, click the gear icon on the top right, then advanced settings, and adjust it accordingly for walking and running.
