Using Surge when can't connect to the Internet

I'm going to be taking an 8-day cruise in a couple months. I understand that the Surge can hold detailed data for up to 7 days, and summary data for 30 days. I won't have Internet access during the cruise, but I *will* have my iPhone with me, with the Fitbit app installed. Of course my iPhone won't have Internet access either, but I'm thinking I should still be able to sync the Surge to the iPhone.

My question is this: If I power up my iPhone every day and allow it to sync to the Surge via Bluetooth, will that get around the 7-day limit for detailed data? In other words, will the detailed data then be stored on my iPhone for longer than 7 days, and then be synced to the Internet when I connect my iPhone to the Internet at the end of the cruise?

An internet connection is required. You're not dumping the data to your phone, but using your phone to upload it to the Fitbit site.

@ETHarmon,

Welcome to the community!

@SunsetRunner is absolutely right, the data is taken directly from your Fitbit to the servers.  It's never stored in the phone.

Are you going to be completely off the grid for all 8 days of that cruise?  I mean, are you going to be hitting a port where you may get wi-fi access or data access (though roaming)?  If so, then that is your best bet.  Spend a few minutes during those port visits to sync and upload your Fitbit data.

You may also want to log out of the app while you're on the ship (or disable bluetooth) to save both your phone and Fitbit some power.  Oh, and don't forget to pack your charging cable.

I hope this helps.

I definitely won't forget the charger 🙂 St. Kitts, St. Maarten/Martin, San Juan, and Haiti. I think San Juan might be the only chance I'll have for an Internet connection. But that's ok. We're sailing from Ft. Lauderdale late Saturday afternoon, so I'll have Internet most of that day, and arriving back in Ft. Lauderdale early Sunday morning 8 days later, so I'll have Internet then as well. So really, it's only a half day at the most that I'll be down, and if Fitbit is storing summary data, then that's good enough.

And hey, if Fitbit isn't running then those cruise buffet calories don't count, right?

We had internet (might have only been 3G) in San Juan through Verizon. You might want to check with your carrier.

No calories count on cruise ships.

I have StraightTalk, but it's running over ther Verizon network, so it may be ok. Guess I'll find out when I get there!
