surge step count accuray

Have been using the surge now for almost 3 weeks, and am quite happy with it. I got ot wondering about the accuracy of the step count, though...

Example : Went to bed last night at about 11 pm, slept till 6:30 am, did not get up during the night. As far as I know, and I don't sleepwalk.....

However, when I woke up this morning, checked the surge, before getting up, and it already showed 190 steps....

I have only been using my surge for 2 days, but am wondering the same thing.  I had 139 steps while I slept, and another 200+ steps were counted as I sat in my car driving to work.

All Fitbit trackers will count step like vibrations whenever they see them, regardless of what the tracker believes you're doing. I've tended to get a few steps in my sleep on occasion (100+ seems consistent with what I've seen sometimes) but we do move around in sleep so I've tended to dismiss it. The calorie impact is minimal in any case which is what I was really interested in at the time.

Similarly I found driving with a manual transmission tends to log a few more steps than I'd like but the car is vibrating and my arm is moving so, again, I'm not really surprised.

I toyed with the logging of a Driving activity for a while but the heightened calorie burn associated with driving tended to match the extra calories associated with the falsely logged steps so I gave up worrying about it in the end.

Of course, as I was looking at calories more than steps that was fine in my case but I realise that everyone will focus on a different metric from these things.

Mike thanks, I wish it were that easy .. fitbit on the left hand and its an automatic.  I wouldn't worry about it either but right now the step count from sleeping or driving is like nearly 50% of my steps so far today.

Driving a manual, I averaged about 10 steps per minute so that was only 500 for a 50 minute drive. Now I've got an automatic and though I haven't actually checked recently, I think I got about 60 on the drive home when I first had it. Hence my comfort in ignoring things.

You can log the Driving activity to knock the steps out of some of the daily figures but it won't eliminate them completely.
