Lately I have noticed that I have to re-charge my Versa 4 more often. Is that a sign that the battery is starting to fail?

Welcome to the Fitbit community, @Pvoorheis!

Sad to hear that you're having issues with your Versa 4's battery life. First I'd suggest syncing your device to not lose any data it has tracked so far. Then please restart your device by holding it's button for around 10 seconds until you'll see the Fibit logo on it's display and check if battery life is improved afterwards.

Also, as there there are quite a few possible reasons for reduced battery life, I'd suggest to have a closer look here to see what might apply to your device:

Can I extend my Fitbit device's battery life?

Finally please keep in mind to avoid letting the battery drain below 15 percent and avoid charging it above 85 percent most of the time to generally keep the battery in good condition for a longer time. This goes for all devices with Lithium based batteries.
