My versa 4 used to track my naps perfectly even when they are under 2hrs though like the documents mention, the deep/rem zones were not measured.
But yesterday and today they were not detected at all. Not sure if it is a firmware / software update, though I didn't notice any. Is this a change or something wrong with the device?
A secondary problem is that when I manual log the nap time it magically breaks it down to 3 zones it track normally for shorter naps. This seems like a bug ... perhaps this what it does for all short naps, just make up zones?

I've always thought it was one hour as the limiting time for auto-detecting naps. unless something has changed, maybe your previous naps that were detected were between 1 and 2 hours, but recent non-detected ones were under one hour.
One approach for recording naps you expect will be less than 3 hours is to use the "begin sleep now" and "I'm awake" buttons. 'Begin sleep now' can be found under the Sleep tile, then + at top right. Many people mistakenly use that every night, but that prevents getting the sleep stages and sleep score, but as long as not getting stages for nap under 3 hours anyway. And then you get that same asleep, restless, awake as you did from logging you nap. I believe it reconstructs that from your motion rather than actually using heart rate data, similar to how Fitbits measured sleep before they had heart rate detectors. And apparently it takes 3 hours of heart rate data to be confident of truly detecting sleep and recognizing stages, so less than 3 hours, it is basically a 'best guess', and you could probably fool it if you could sit or lie perfectly still over an hour (or maybe it is 2 hours). In fact I see some people complain that they get naps credited when they are watching TV; I certainly can't sit that still that long but maybe some do.

Thanks. Didn't know about the "begin sleep now" button.
As for my problem, my versa 4 started tracking sleep again. Perhaps the watch was too loose on the wrist or it was some other one-off problem.
Upon closer reading, yes, 1hr is when it detects sleep. It need HR measurements for 3hrs to construct full sleep stages (Awake/REM/Light/Deep) - and only with newer devices which track HR continuously. So in the 1-3hr range it breaks down sleep into Awake/Restless/Asleep buckets, not standard sleep stages like in the image I posted above.
It is possible that it record wrist movements all the time and use that to backfill those buckets when someone log sleep later. Perhaps I could log fake naps for times I was doing different activities and see what it does.
