My Versa 4 requires an update but every time I try to update the tracker software it fails. The screen on my watch does not respond to touch any more due to the inability to update it. I have uninstalled the app on my phone and reinstalled it, but it still won’t update.

I'm glad to help you with the firmware update of your Versa 4.
If the firmware update has gotten stuck in the middle of the process, there are some tips you can follow in an attempt to relaunch it. Read our help article Why can't I update my Fitbit device? below the section "Sense series and Versa series" and check if there's a step left to do.

I have tried all the steps you have signposted me to multiple times and the tracker still doesn’t update. Eventually after about 20 attempts it says it has updated but after five minutes it says I need to update my tracker again, and I have the same problem. I have again just managed to update the tracker but the screen swipe is still not working so I am fully expecting the update tracker message again shortly. The screen swipe does work when it updates so I know it is not an issue with the screen itself, but after 5 minutes, it stops working again and I get the update tracker message.

See if you are able to factory reset your device. You can find this option in the settings menu of your Versa 4.
If you are no longer able to interact with your Versa 4 because the firmware update didn't complete, i recommend that you get in touch with our support team. They count with better resources to assist you further.
