Comparing 2 Zips

My SO and I both have the zip fitbits.  We both work from home and while I tend to walk around the house while working and he tends to sit at his desk a good bit of the day, it never fails that he registers a greater number of steps as I do.  When we take walks together, walking side by side, I notice that for every two steps he takes, with my stride, I take about 3 and again, at the end of the walk, he has at least 15-20% more steps than I do.  At first I thought it was my zip so we traded and again, same issue with him using mine and me using his.  Then we tried another zip for him to see if his was consistent, same issue.  I've tested by putting mine in the case and clipping it to the waist of my jeans rather than in my pocket (which is where he carries his) and it doesn't seem to make a difference.  His zip consistently shows more steps.  It just doesn't make any sense to me. Any suggestions as to what might be the reason?

Nice to see you here @SunsetRunner! In this case I would like to advice you to please double check your personal settings and your stride length. Also, factors such as tracker placement, dominant or non-dominant wrist, personal information (like height, weight, age and gender), and stride length can all affect the number of steps recorded.

I can thing of a few things that might be the cause of the problem:

  • long torso/short legs: less pronounced up-and-down signal for the Zip to interpret
  • wide hips/flexible spine: a different way to have less up-and-down signal for the Zip to interpret
  • limp or gait asymmetry: one side of your body is doing more work than the other side

You might try several things. Using the holder, try placing the Zip at different places on your waistband, to see if it makes any difference. Try positioning it at your left hip, right hip, and in the middle, and keep track of any differences in steps observed, using your SO as a reference. Take about ten walks, 3 on one hip, 3 on the other hip, and 4 in the middle, and see if you can find any systematic differences.
