My Fitbit wasn't resetting at midnight and was replaced because it was still under warranty. When I added the new device to my account, it kept the number of steps (incorrect 12000+), but accurately captured calories and distance.

Welcome to the Fitbit Community @NJane. It's great to have you here. It seems that some information got lost during the set up process. Your new Zip should work properly track your steps accurately from now on. As a workaround only, you can add steps to your account by manually logging activities like Walking, Running or Hiking. Let me know how it goes.
Hope to see you around more often.
