When battery has been out for several days, and I want to go back and log steps on computer, how is that done?

One way is to manually log a walk. Go to https://www.fitbit.com/activities and click on the walking icon near the bottom. You can then enter the distance or change the distance unit to steps.
Note that manually logged steps will not count towards badges, challenges or the step count on your friends list.
