Lost steps mid walk/sync

So while out for my walk today I pulled out my phone to check my steps. It synced and said somewhere around 2700. A while later I got a text, pulled out my phone, opened the screen. The fitbit app was still open and it began to sync again. Dropped me down to 2300 and said low battery. I put a fresh battery in 2 weeks ago. I have had nothing but problems lately with my zip. I spent an entire week walking daily with friends. Same route with them day after day. My fitbit came in around 3000-4000 steps under them every day.

Hey hey hey, thanks for stopping by @cinderbay! This sounds odd. In this case, I would recommend checking the metal spring inside the Zip's battery compartment. Sometimes your tracker will behave like you described when this is bent. Here is a picture of how it should look like:
