Hi there @Emcat, welcome aboard to our Community. About your tracker is going dead at different times of the day I suggest to review the side spring of the battery space as may be bent as a result of improper battery insertion or pressure being applied to the back housing. There should be there direct contact between the battery and the battery contacts inside your Zip tracker.
You can do this by opening the battery door of your Zip, removing your battery, and ensuring that the silver battery tab located in the lower right half of your tracker is flush with the white box outline in the tracker housing.
Regarding the MobileTrack feature note this is only available for compatible devices. For the latest list of devices that support the MobileTrack feature, visit http://www.fitbit.com/devices. If your mobile device is compatible, log into the app and go to the Account screen. Choose the option for setting up a new device and follow the MobileTrack instructions.
To answer your question if your steps will be count double, please take a look at @DerrickS's post for more information.
Hope this helps and let me know if you have more questions.

Hi there @boots, welcome aboard to our Community. I was passing by and I saw your post, so my recommendation is to try to set up your tracker as a New Device, but before you do this lets make sure the battery is working as it should.
Make sure your Zip is using a battery with enough charge. As this might be one of the reason your tracker is loosing the time. In addition to this, review if the battery is not loosing connection. Sometimes the side spring may be bent as a result of improper battery insertion or pressure being applied to the back housing. removing your battery, and ensuring that the silver battery tab located in the lower right half of your tracker is flush with the white box outline in the tracker housing. You can use this post as reference suggested by @Rich_Laue.
Now depending of what type of device you are using, proceed to add your tracker as a new device. If you are using android or a computer this other post can be of your help. If you are using the iOS app just go to your account tab and tap Set up a Device, choose the Zip tracker and follow the onscreen instructions.
Let me know how it goes, I'll be around if you need more help.
