From Fitbit:
The battery for the Fitbit Zip should last up to 5 or 6 months with regular use, and whenever you experience any battery draining it may be caused by improper battery insertion or pressure being applied to the back housing.
That is a significant problem with the ZIP. The problem appears to not be so much with the connector at the bottom (the "-" battery contact) but more so with the one on the side (the "+" battery contact).
For the next ZIP version, you might want to consider making the side ("+") connection about 1/4" long with the mounting point being a one end of the 1/4" connection. It might be more reliable than the (about) 1/16" tab that is curled over to make the connection.
This poor connection on the side may be related to the battery drain or unable to sync problems frequently encountered.
The idea is a 1/4" x 1/16" piece of springy metal (like the bottom connector) to replace the 1/16" tab of rolled over springy metal at the side. Since the new 1/4" one is longer and only fixed at one end, it would push against the side of the "+" side (actually the edge) of the battery. The bottom spring, pushes against "-" face of the battery. If there are problems, the user could then do, as suggested elsewhere, gently raise the bottom contact or gently move the side contact away from the edge (nearer the battery). Inserting a new battery would entail setting the edge of the battery against the 1/4" x 1/16" spring and then down into the battery holder. It might also make it easier to open of close the back of the ZIP.
