I wear my zip around my neck on a string so I won't lose it. 5 times since owning it I have had it go crazy, counting one step per second. It will start this usually in the morning after I start my day and I won't notice until later when I synch to my iphone. I get huge numbers like 145000 steps before I notice it and remove the battery to reset it.
This happened twice this week. Really gives me a nice high average steps for the week but I'd really like it to be accurate. Is it defective?
I wear it even when sleeping so its not sitting near a vibrating object.

It's great to see that you've visited the Fitbit Community @SunsetRunner. This situation might be related to an electrical appliance issuing vibrations near your Zip. Those vibrations could be recorded by your tracker as steps. I would recommend placing your tracker in a different place at night to see if it does the trick.
You can negate the extra data by manually logging driving.

I don't think so, it starts up while I'm up and moving around, doing housework. Then sitting for a while. It still keeps counting one step per second regardless of where I am or what I'm doing. It does not happen overnight. I don't have to be at home for this to occur either.
I've tried to use the driving activity you suggested to negate yesterdays event but it hasn't made any difference to my data.
