For all day sync to work must the mobile app be open all the time? I open the app a few times per day, but always close it after manually syncing and viewing data.

Let me help you with your inquiry about All day sync. For this feature to work the app must be running in the background or the app won't be able to manage the syncing between your phone and your device. You can read more about the sync process here.
