I would like to set my stride length back to auto, but cannot. Any advice?

I’m using a Sense2 and an iPhone. I’ve read instructions that tell me what to do in the FitBit app and on the FitBit website. Neither have worked.

when I got my device a month ago, it was set to auto stride length. I manually set it. Now I want auto back and can’t seem to find that option anywhere.

Any advice, please?

Hi @KenK123 and welcome to the Fitbit Community!

Thank you for your message regarding the stride length.

May I suggest you to read and follow the steps shown in the following help article?  Can I change my stride length in my Fitbit account? You can choose to have your stride calculated automatically via web access ( Fitbit settings page at fitbit.com).

Thanks for the reply, but I need more specifics. When I try what the article recommends, I get a screen (below) that only allows me to enter numbers. I cannot see any way to either delete manually entered numbers or any way to choose auto.  I just want to go back to auto stride.

Hi @KenK123.  I use iOS and this is the path I see:

  •  Tap on your Exercise days tile on your Fitbit app
  • Tap on the three dots in the upper right, then Activity settings
  • Scroll down to the FEATURE SETTINGS section and tap on Stride length
  • Your screenshot didn't come through, but you should see this screen and toggle Set automatically to ON

Laurie: Thanks! I think I see the issue. When I do as you advise, I don’t get the option at the top of the page. I’m gonna try my screen print again so you can see. I’m using iOS 18.6.2 and Fitbit App version Fitbit 4.53 (45331005).

@KenK123   This is weird.  I have two Fitbit accounts.  I access one from my iPhone and the other from my iPad.  Both use 18.7.1 and both have Fitbit app version 4.53.  I don't think your OS version is the issue.  I also want to point out that @MarioSFitbit included a link to a Fitbit web page that is active.  There is an option to set stride length automatically there.  Does that option work?

@MarioSFitbit   Can you help this user who has the same app version that I have, but a different screen?

I also moved this thread to the iOS app forum, a better fit for this issue.

I did try the advice @MarioSFitbit suggested. I have the same issue at fitbit.com.  I only get options to change the stride length. I do not get an option to select auto vs manual.  I'm not sure what this screenis supposed to look like at fitbit.com, but I don't see an option.  I hope my screen print comes through on this reply.

Also, I have chatted with customer support and they opened a case. Is there I way that I can include this new info (the missing option and screen prints) to the existing case? I don't know how to access an existing case.

I happened to get an email this morning from Customer Support. So I was able to share the link to this conversation. They wanted to close the case saying the functionality I'm looking for is not currently supported for IOS. I asked them to reopen and look at this conversation because the option does appear for Laurie.

@KenK123   I flagged this thread again to get a moderator's attention.  Support's answer sounds very sketchy to me.  The default setting for stride length is automatic for all new users.

I can help you a little in the meantime.  Fitbit uses an accepted formula to estimate walking stride length:

  • For males:  height in inches x 0.415
  • For females: height in inches x 0.413

I can't find a formula for running stride length.

@LZeeW Thank you for your message and flagging this for us.

@KenK123 Thank you for your messages, efforts, and patience.

Please take our apologies for the info you got.
You should be able to change the stride length with the iOS Fitbit app as well as with the Setting page in the browser.

On your phone try the following.

Log out from the Fitbit app.
As a 1 time exception, delete the Fitbit app.
Turn your phone off and on again.

After the phone restarts, log in and try to change the stride length again.

Thanks Juan.  I tried as you requested. Still no luck. The option (or the object on that page) is still not showing.

Juan: if recreation instructions would help.

Start with an IPhone that has never had the Fitbit app installed. Install the app. Navigate to the settings- activities - feature settings. Edit the stride length settings. Note that the resulting page includes a toggle switch object at the top of the page showing that the Auto stride length is set by default. Change it to Manual and enter numeric values for Walk and Run stride lengths. Save. Back out and close the app.

Restart the app, navigate to return to the Stride length settings page. Edit the settings. Notice that the page now does not include an object to toggle from Manual to Auto.

@KenK123 , Thank you for your messages and the steps you made to reproduce the issue.

I've informed our team and they will look into this.

I've also passed them your description so that they know what you have been doing.
Just to confirm, your phone is still on  iOS 18.6.2, right?
Could you also share what iPhone model you are using? (eg. iPhone 15, iPhone 17, etc)
