Hello, @SunsetRunner! Thanks for joining us! Thank you for reporting this to us, this was a bug we were experiencing a few months ago. However if for some reason you are still having trouble with joining Challenges, does force quitting and restarting the App with a good Internet connection help?
You can force close the App by: rapidly double tapping the iOS home button > swipe left until you see a preview of the Fitbit iOS App > and then swipe up on the preview to force
Also make sure on your App store that you are using the latest version of the Fitbit App.
